Tests for biogas production from whey and permeate have been completed in April.  These laboratory-scale tests were carried out for a bit more than one year, enabling the discovery of the most appropriate configuration to maximise methane production for reactor installation at pilot scale.

Finally, a two-phase configuration with two CSTR reactors was selected to separate substrate hydrolysis from methanogenesis Moreover, these tests have facilitated the definition of reactor operating parameters (maximum admissible organic loading rate and hydraulic retention times), as well as macro-nutrient and micro-nutrient addition needs, quantification of bicarbonate amounts required to maintain the right pH level in the methanogenesis phase.
